The Department

Description

The Speech and Language Therapy Department belongs to the School of Health Sciences of the University of Ioannina and was established by Law 4559/2018 (Government Gazette A' 142/03-08-2018). From 1-10-2018, all the staff and students of the Speech Therapy department of the former TEI Epirus joined the currently established Department (P.D. 200 Government Gazette 179/16-09-99).

In particular, the Department of Speech and Language Therapy is one of the three Greek departments of Higher Tertiary Educational Institutions, with a four-year study cycle, which provides training in speech/communication pathology, voice, speech, and swallowing. The Curriculum of the Speech and Language Therapy Department is harmonized with the current content of the study programs concerning the sciences of speech and communication disorders worldwide. The Study Program includes elementary courses from the disciplines of medicine, linguistics, and psychology, specialty courses in speech, speech, voice, swallowing, and hearing disorders as well as courses related to new technologies, statistics, and research methodology. At the same time, based on the program, a significant number of mandatory clinical hours (approximately 400) are implemented under the supervision of professional Speech Therapists/Speech Pathologists in special schools, institutions, hospitals, and clinics within the University, aimed at the evaluation, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of patients by the students. Also, for the completion of their studies, the students of the Department are required to conduct 600 hours of practical training.

The Department of Speech and Language Therapy, focusing on the student, seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • their education on the application of health sciences, life sciences, and natural sciences with a purpose
  • the prevention, assessment, and diagnosis of human communication, speech, voice, speech, and swallowing
  • early intervention and treatment of human communication, speech, voice, and swallowing
  • its connection to the scientific research of speech, voice, and swallowing disorders

In addition, it aims to:

  • provide diagnosis and treatment services to the public through the Department's clinic
  • conduct primary research on issues related to typical development as well as speech, voice, and swallowing disorders with a special emphasis on the Greek language and multilingual environments
Admission criteria for students in the Department of Speech Therapy

For registration/admission to the Speech Therapy Department, the interview is in accordance with the provisions of par. 6 of article 43 of Law 2413/1996 (Government Gazette 1241t.A/17-06-1996), as supplemented by no. F.152/B3/5554/27-9-1999 document of the Ministry of Health.

Specifically, prospective students, to the extent required to be fully able to participate in all educational processes, and provide the breadth of professional services offered within the profession, must:

  • not suffer from voice, speech, reverberation, speech, and hearing disorders
  • have functional vision
  • have normal intelligence
  • not have a significant deviation from normal in the symmetrical structure and function of the face, oral cavity, head, and neck
  • have no significant deviation from normal in the construction and function of the upper limbs and have no motor disabilities in the upper limbs
  • not suffer from focal brain damage (aphasia, head injuries, etc.)
  • not suffer from neurological diseases (congenital or not, developmental, or non-developmental type such as Down syndrome, Mental Retardation, autism, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc.)
  • not suffer from severe degenerative, rapidly developing neurological diseases (encephalopathy, neuroinfections, demyelinating diseases, etc.)
  • not suffer from incurable infectious diseases (tuberculosis, hepatitis, etc.)
  • have no history of alcoholism, drug use, violent, aggressive, or anti-social behavior in general
  • not suffer from psychological, psychiatric, or other behavioral disorders to the extent that they burden or make impossible the educational, diagnostic, or therapeutic process

Finally, the graduates of the Speech Therapy Department are guaranteed (a) Professional Rights according to [PD. 96 of 2000 (Government Gazette A.82/18-4-2002)] and (b) License to Practice Speech Therapist in accordance with [PD 49/2016 (Government Gazette A΄80/5-5-2016)]
